Marka-e-Haq: Nation Marks Decisive Battle of Truth

Field Marshal Asim Munir warns future aggression will face "far-reaching and painful" response

By Staff Reporter · Rawalpindi

The nation is solemnly marking the one-year anniversary of the May 2025 conflict with India — officially christened "Marka-e-Haq" (Battle of Truth) — with ceremonies held across the country from the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi to the streets of Lahore.

Field Marshal Asim Munir, addressing a high-level ceremony at the GHQ, described the conflict as a "decisive battle between two ideologies," invoking the language of resolve and sacrifice. He stated unequivocally that any future act of aggression against Pakistan would be met with a response "far-reaching and painful in nature."

In Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz formally inaugurated Marka-e-Haq Square at the site of the former Kutchery Chowk — a centrepiece of the province's commemorative events. Floral tributes, military parades, and public rallies characterised the day across major cities.

15 Martyred in Bannu Suicide Blast; Rickshaw Packed with Explosives Used in Attack

By Security Correspondent · Bannu

At least fifteen police personnel were martyred Monday morning after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden rickshaw at a checkpoint in Bannu. The attack, claimed by militant elements operating in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, sent shockwaves through security establishments.

The blast reduced the checkpoint structure and several nearby vehicles to rubble. Rescue teams worked through the morning to evacuate the wounded. Officials have confirmed the death toll may rise as several officers remain in critical condition.

The incident underscores a sobering reality: K-P recorded 3,811 terror incidents last year alone — accounting for the vast majority of Pakistan's security challenges. Critics argue that kinetic operations alone have failed to stem the tide, and a comprehensive policy review is urgently required.

Security analysts warn that the geographical and political fault lines running through the province continue to provide cover for disgruntled militant cells, rendering rhetoric-based responses insufficient.

Fuel Prices Rise Rs. 15/Litre; Pakistan Eyes First Panda Bond Worth $250 Million

By Economic Desk · Islamabad

Pakistan has hiked petrol and diesel prices by approximately Rs. 15 per litre in the latest fortnightly revision — a move aligned with commitments made to the International Monetary Fund as part of the country's ongoing stabilisation programme.

Panda Bond: A Strategic Pivot to Chinese Capital

In a significant development, Pakistan is set to launch its first-ever yuan-denominated "Panda Bond" next week, targeting a raise of $250 million. Financial analysts describe the move as a strategic pivot toward Chinese capital markets — aimed at diversifying financing sources and easing pressure on dollar reserves strained by the current account deficit.

The bond issuance is expected to deepen Pakistan's economic integration with Beijing, even as the government negotiates with the IMF and Western creditors.

Internet Alert: PTCL Warns of Slowdowns

PTCL has issued a service degradation advisory for May 11–18 citing maintenance work on a submarine cable. Users, particularly in the evenings, should anticipate significant slowdowns in broadband and mobile data speeds.

Iran Responds to US Peace Proposal; Trump Rejects Terms

Islamabad / Washington

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has confirmed that Pakistan formally received Iran's response to a US-backed peace proposal. Islamabad's role as regional mediator has grown significantly in recent weeks.

While Tehran signalled a focus on ending hostilities, US President Donald Trump publicly labelled the terms "unacceptable," prolonging uncertainty near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and dashing hopes of a swift diplomatic resolution.

Brent Crude Spikes 3% to $104 on Gulf Supply Fears

London / Dubai

Global oil markets lurched higher Monday as Brent crude surged nearly 3%, touching $104.06 per barrel, amid fears that prolonged tensions in the Persian Gulf could threaten supply routes critical to global energy flows.

Traders flagged the Strait of Hormuz — through which roughly one-fifth of global oil transits — as the primary flashpoint. Analysts warn of further price volatility if diplomatic deadlock persists.

Editorial & Opinion

Editorial I

The Ugly Side of the 'Beauty' Industry

Pakistan faces a mounting public health crisis: salons and parlours are rebranding as "aesthetic clinics," offering fillers and laser treatments without qualified dermatologists. With 38 million procedures performed globally in 2024, local demand has surged dangerously. The PMDC has frameworks — but enforcement is inconsistent. A regulatory crackdown is urgently needed before a tragedy forces the issue.

Editorial II

Bannu Again: The Rhetoric Must End

Despite military operations and political persuasion, disgruntled militant elements remain undeterred. K-P's 3,811 incidents last year demand more than speeches. The paper calls for a collective policy review — one that addresses the deep geographical and political fissures enabling continued violence in Pakistan's northwest.

Editorial III

Film City: A Shot in the Arm for Pakistan's Creative Sector

Punjab's decision to build a 50-acre Film City within Lahore's Nawaz Sharif IT City is ambitious and welcome. The end-to-end production hub for film, VFX, and animation could slash costly foreign post-production outsourcing. The caveat: success hinges on genuine professional training culture — not mere real estate development.

Commentary

Marka-e-Haq Anniversary: Sovereignty Celebrated, Peace Still Sought

Pakistan marks last May's swift military response as a defining moment of sovereignty. Yet the editorial balances pride with pragmatism: as Islamabad mediates the US–Iran peace process and issues Panda Bonds to diversify finances, regional stability remains as urgent as martial commemoration. Swords and diplomacy must walk together.
