Islamabad Formalises US Outreach With Professional Lobbying Contract

Pakistan has formalised its strategic outreach to Washington by signing a two-year contract with the Ervin Graves Strategy Group, a prominent US-based lobbying firm. The agreement is designed to strengthen Pakistan's economic, strategic, and diplomatic standing in the American capital.

The move coincides with Islamabad's active role in mediating between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran—a high-stakes diplomatic endeavour that has elevated Pakistan's global profile considerably in recent weeks.

Officials have framed the lobbying engagement as a transition from reactive diplomacy to proactive narrative-building, acknowledging that soft power alone is insufficient in today's multipolar geopolitical environment.

Pakistan's mediation between Washington and Tehran has played a stabilising role along critical oil routes, according to diplomatic observers. Whether this role converts into lasting strategic dividends remains the central question for Islamabad's foreign policy apparatus.

Balancing Acts—Diplomatic Ambition Meets Fiscal Reality

As Pakistan plays global mediator, the budget tells a different story at home

By Rooma Mehmood · Editor-in-Chief

As the month of May draws to a close, Pakistan finds itself at a unique, if precarious, intersection of global mediation and domestic economic introspection. Islamabad has emerged as a critical conduit in the high-stakes US-Iran diplomatic landscape—a role that has undeniably bolstered the nation's relevance on the world stage.

Yet the contrast with our domestic fiscal reality remains stark. As the National Assembly and Senate prepare to convene on June 5 for federal budget deliberations, the narrative is one of managing scarcity rather than driving transformation. Debt servicing continues to consume a disproportionate share of national resources.

The structural inefficiencies persist: a narrow tax base, the burden of taxation falling on the already visible, and the struggle to formalise the informal economy. While we talk of regional peace and global mediation, we must ask—how much of our diplomatic capital are we actually leveraging to alleviate these systemic pressures?

A state that can mediate between global superpowers should, in theory, be capable of mediating between its own competing interests—between the protected elites and the striving citizenry, between the desire for short-term fixes and the need for structural change.

Islamabad has demonstrated that it can hold the world's attention. Now, it must prove it can hold the trust of its own people.
