Pakistan Marks One Year Since India Conflict
Ceasefire Holds as "Frozen" Reality; PM Vows Defeat of Militancy & Continued Vigilance.
Islamabad
Pakistan pauses today in solemn commemoration of the four-day May 2025 conflict with India — a chapter that tested both military resolve and the resilience of the nation's diplomatic fabric. Banners across the capital honor leadership; ceremonies across garrison cities mark the occasion with restrained pride.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing the nation, reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to peace while pledging zero tolerance for aggression. The armed forces, he declared, stand ready.
"Peace secured through strength is the only peace worth keeping."
The ceasefire announced with United States involvement continues to hold — though analysts describe the present reality as a "frozen conflict," with deep-rooted tensions persisting beneath a surface calm.
Security & Diplomacy
China has formally confirmed technical assistance rendered to Pakistan during last year's conflict — a statement welcomed in Islamabad and closely watched in New Delhi and Washington. The disclosure underscores the depth of Sino-Pakistani strategic alignment even as regional tensions simmer.
Pakistan's diplomatic footprint continues to expand. Islamabad is now reported to be actively involved in bridging channels between the United States and Iran — lending credibility to its self-styled role as a credible, neutral interlocutor in volatile geopolitical theatres.
⚠ Security Alert — Bannu, KPK
Three police officers were killed and several others wounded in a car bomb attack followed by targeted gunfire in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near the Afghan border. The TTP is suspected. Security forces have cordoned the area; counter-operations are underway.
Economy & Regional Pacts
IMF-related economic negotiations continue in the background, with authorities projecting cautious optimism on fiscal discipline targets. Pakistan and Bangladesh have also concluded a regional security framework, signalling expanding bilateral cooperation in South Asia.
Military analysts note the anniversary serves a dual purpose: honoring sacrifice while reinforcing deterrence. The contrast between last year's conflict zone and today's diplomatic hustle represents, they argue, Pakistan's most significant strategic evolution in a decade.

Pakistan's Vigilant Peace: One Year On, Lessons for a Fragile World
By Rooma Mehmood · Editor-in-Chief, Rooma News · Islamabad
One year ago, in May 2025, the subcontinent stood on the precipice of something far graver than a border skirmish. Four days of intense conflict between Pakistan and India tested not only military resolve but the very fabric of regional stability. Today, as the nation commemorates that chapter with solemn pride in its armed forces' professionalism and the leadership's strategic restraint, we at Rooma News reflect on a truth that remains as relevant now as it was then: peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of sovereign strength and wise diplomacy.
The ceasefire that followed, facilitated in part by international partners including the United States, continues to hold — albeit as a "frozen" reality rather than a resolved one. Tensions persist. Yet Pakistan has emerged not merely as a survivor of crisis, but as a credible actor in global peacemaking. Our recent diplomatic bridging efforts between the United States and Iran underscore this maturing role. Islamabad's channels remain open when others are strained, proving that neutrality, exercised with clarity and purpose, can serve both national interest and broader stability.
"History will judge not how fiercely we fought, but how intelligently we secured peace with dignity."
This is no time for triumphalism. The anniversary rightly honors our soldiers and the resilience of our people. But it must also prompt introspection. The militancy challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan — exemplified by the recent tragic loss of police officers in Bannu — remind us that internal security remains intertwined with external threats. Defeating TTP remnants and addressing legitimate grievances through governance and development is not optional; it is essential to long-term sovereignty.
On the world stage, the picture is equally complex. The fragile US-Iran ceasefire, naval incidents in critical waterways, and the humanitarian crisis aboard the MV Hondius all signal an era of cascading risks. Russia's signals on Ukraine, political shifts in the UK, and aviation tragedies in the US further illustrate a global order under stress. In such times, Pakistan's path must remain principled: strengthen alliances where they serve mutual respect — notably with China and friendly Gulf states — pursue economic resilience through IMF discipline and domestic reform, and reject any adventurism that could derail our trajectory.
Democracy, despite its turbulence, continues to demonstrate resilience greater than its critics allow. Pakistan's institutions — military, civilian, and diplomatic — have shown they can navigate pressure when guided by national interest above partisan fervor. As we mark this anniversary, let us commit to the harder work ahead: building an economy that deters aggression through prosperity, fostering national unity that transcends divides, and projecting a Pakistan that is strong enough to deter, wise enough to mediate, and visionary enough to invest in its youth and future.
