OPEC+ Lifts Output Target by 188,000 Barrels

Analysts doubt relief as US–Iran naval standoff keeps crude above $100.

By Our Energy Desk

OPEC+ voted Sunday to raise collective production targets for June by 188,000 barrels per day, the alliance's second consecutive monthly increase. The move is a direct response to global supply anxiety triggered by the US Navy's "Project Freedom" deployment in the Strait of Hormuz.

Market response was muted. Brent crude held above $100 per barrel, as traders priced in continued uncertainty around Iran's three-phase counter-proposal and the potential for miscalculation in already congested shipping lanes.

Trump Launches "Project Freedom" in Hormuz; Iran Warns of Ceasefire Breach

US Navy to escort neutral merchant vessels through contested waters as oil markets brace for prolonged volatility and Pakistan prepares to host landmark US–Iran talks.

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent · Washington / Islamabad

President Donald Trump formally announced "Project Freedom" late Sunday, authorising the US Navy to shepherd neutral-flagged commercial tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes daily.

The announcement immediately drew a sharp rebuke from Tehran. A spokesman for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that any US naval escort mission constituted a violation of the fragile ceasefire terms reached in February, warning that the IRGC reserves the right to "respond proportionally to any provocation in our territorial waters."

"We cannot be the world's mediator while remaining at war with our own economic indicators."

Against this backdrop, Islamabad is preparing for what diplomats are quietly calling the "Islamabad Opening"—the first direct, high-level engagement between senior US and Iranian delegations on Pakistani soil since the 1979 Revolution. The talks, expected to begin as early as Wednesday, represent a significant foreign-policy achievement for the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Oil prices, which dipped briefly following the announcement on the assumption that shipping disruptions would ease, quickly recovered above $100 per barrel as traders digested the Iranian response. Analysts at Karachi-based Topline Securities estimate that every $10 rise in crude translates into a Rs. 4–6 per litre increase in domestic fuel costs, directly pressuring Pakistan's petroleum levy revenue targets under its IMF programme.

Achakzai Proposes 18-Month National Government; PTI Access to Imran Khan Key Demand

By Our Political Reporter · Islamabad

Mahmood Khan Achakzai, convener of the Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan, formally presented a blueprint Sunday for an 18-month national unity government drawing in the PTI, PML-N, and PPP. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Achakzai argued that granting PTI delegations access to jailed founding chairman Imran Khan at Adiala Jail is a "critical first step" to lowering the country's political temperature ahead of any inclusive dialogue.

Government spokespersons did not immediately endorse the proposal but declined to rule it out, with one senior minister telling Rooma News that "all constructive suggestions are on the table."

Pakistan–Afghan Ceasefire "Extremely Fragile" After Kunar, Spin Boldak Clashes

By Our Security Desk

The ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban-led government remains under severe stress following armed clashes in the Spin Boldak and Kunar regions over the weekend. Taliban authorities allege that strikes near a university in Kunar caused civilian casualties—a claim Pakistan's Information Ministry has firmly rejected as "frivolous and fake."

Security analysts warn that the continued breakdown of border management mechanisms, combined with the alleged involvement of non-state actors on both sides, risks a wider escalation that neither Islamabad nor Kabul can easily contain.

The Strait of Diplomacy:

Pakistan's High-Stakes Balancing Act

As global energy markets shudder under $100 oil, Islamabad earns geopolitical credit — but the real test lies at home.

Editorial Board · Rooma News

As the global energy market shudders under the weight of $100-per-barrel oil, the world's gaze has shifted from the turbulent waters of the Strait of Hormuz to the high-ceilinged conference rooms of Islamabad. The "Islamabad Opening"—the first direct engagement between senior U.S. and Iranian delegations on Pakistani soil since 1979—marks a watershed moment for Pakistan's foreign policy. Yet, while Islamabad earns its stripes as a "global middle power," the domestic landscape remains a study in stark, painful contrasts.

The diplomatic success of positioning Pakistan as a bridge between Washington and Tehran is a triumph of geography and neutrality. By hosting talks that aim to resolve the US naval initiative and Iran's three-phase counterproposal, Pakistan proves it is too strategically relevant to be overlooked. However, for the average citizen in Karachi, Lahore, or Quetta, these geopolitical accolades offer little comfort against the grinding reality of spiralling inflation.

The opposition's recent "incompetence broadside" hits a raw nerve. While the government briefs its leadership on Middle East peace efforts, the public grapples with the eradication of Polio, which saw its first 2026 case in Sindh this March. It is a sobering reminder that while we look toward the horizon to settle international disputes, our internal frontiers—whether health, economic relief, or political stability—remain dangerously porous.

Furthermore, the fragile ceasefire along the Western border and the recent clashes in Kunar and Spin Boldak highlight the precariousness of our regional security. The Information Ministry's rejection of reports regarding university strikes in Afghanistan may hold firm, but the underlying tension underscores a volatile neighbourhood that demands more than just "Twitter diplomacy."

For the government, the challenge is now one of dual-track leadership. It must continue to leverage its unique access to Tehran and Washington to de-escalate a global energy crisis that directly impacts our own petroleum levies. Simultaneously, it must address the domestic crushing economic burdens that the opposition so effectively highlights.

A national government proposal, as suggested by opposition figures, may or may not be the answer, but the need for a consensus-based economic roadmap is undeniable. We cannot be the world's mediator while remaining at war with our own economic indicators. True sovereign strength lies not just in the ability to host rival superpowers, but in the capacity to provide real relief to the common man whose life savings are currently being swallowed by the very oil prices we are trying to stabilise abroad.
