Sharp India–Pakistan Exchange at UN Security Council Debate
Rooma Mehmood, Islamabad Bureau
A pointed war of words erupted at the United Nations Security Council this week as New Delhi levelled accusations of cross-border terrorism against Pakistan during a debate on upholding the UN Charter.
Pakistan's representative firmly rejected the Indian allegations, characterising them as politically motivated and rooted in a pattern of diplomatic bad faith. The exchange drew significant attention from member states and UN observers, reflecting the continued volatility in bilateral relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
"Pakistan has categorically and unreservedly rejected all baseless allegations. Our commitment to peace in the region remains unshakeable."
— Pakistan's UN Representative
Analysts say the confrontation at the Council underscores the urgency of a structured diplomatic dialogue between Islamabad and New Delhi, particularly as both nations navigate a charged regional environment following recent tensions along the Line of Control.
The debate on Charter compliance has, in recent sessions, evolved into a forum where bilateral grievances are aired before an international audience—raising questions about the efficacy of multilateral diplomacy in resolving South Asian disputes.

Separately, official figures revealed that Pakistan's rapidly expanding freelance sector has generated over $950 million in foreign exchange earnings over the past ten months, underscoring the transformative potential of the country's young, digitally skilled workforce. Experts called for sustained policy support to help the sector breach the $1 billion annual milestone.

Pakistan Plays Central Role in US–Iran Mediation
Diplomatic channels involving Qatar and Pakistan are working urgently to finalise a peace framework as the fragile US–Iran ceasefire continues to face stress from reported violations.
The United States has defended recent military activity in the region as acts of "self-defense," while Tehran has condemned what it characterises as provocations that undermine the broader negotiating process. Iran has partially restored internet access following a months-long nationwide blackout—a move analysts interpret as a cautious confidence-building measure.
Pakistan's role as an intermediary reflects growing recognition of Islamabad's unique ability to engage both Western and Islamic world stakeholders. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world's energy supplies passes, remains a focal point of international concern should hostilities escalate.

A Tightrope Walk — Pakistan's Moment of Diplomatic and Fiscal Reckoning
As the nation celebrates Eidul Azha, it stands at a precarious intersection of economic austerity and geopolitical consequence.
As Pakistan celebrates the solemnity and joy of Eidul Azha, the nation finds itself standing at a precarious intersection. The festive air is tempered by the gravity of the challenges looming on the horizon — a transformative federal budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 and a role as a pivotal mediator in one of the most volatile geopolitical conflicts of the decade.
The Fiscal Tightrope
The upcoming budget is not merely a statement of accounts; it is an IMF-monitored crucible. With the government and the Fund in agreement on maintaining a primary surplus target of 2% of GDP, the state is effectively locked into a path of fiscal austerity. The promise of "sacrosanct" targets is as much a commitment to macroeconomic stability as it is a constraint on the state's ability to provide relief to a public weathering the storm of inflation.
The challenge for policymakers is to reconcile this austerity with the urgent need for growth. With revenue targets projected to rise by over Rs 2 trillion, the burden of expansion rests on broadening the tax base and provincial contributions.
History warns that over-reliance on aggressive taxation in a struggling economy risks stifling the very recovery we seek. The government's attempt to balance increased support for the Benazir Income Support Programme against the cold reality of fiscal consolidation will be the defining measure of this budget's success — or failure.
The Diplomatic Crucible
Simultaneously, Pakistan is navigating the high-stakes world of international mediation. The recent visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir to Beijing underscores the multi-layered complexity of our foreign policy. While the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China relations provides a moment of reflection and celebration, the primary focus remains the volatile theatre of US-Iran relations.
That Pakistan has emerged as a central channel for communication between Tehran and Washington is both a testament to our diplomatic standing and a source of immense regional pressure. As the region watches the Strait of Hormuz — the global economy's jugular — it is clear that the status quo is unsustainable.
The recent "self-defense" strikes and the fragility of the ceasefire remind us that a single miscalculation could invite the instability into our own backyard.
A Call for Strategic Cohesion
For this columnist, the common thread between the budget and our diplomacy is the need for resilience. Whether it is the internal stability of our fiscal house or the external stability of our borders, Pakistan can no longer afford to operate in silos.
The government must demonstrate that its economic reforms are not just "IMF-compliant" but "people-centric," ensuring that the pain of consolidation is equitably distributed. On the diplomatic front, while neutrality has served as a bridge, we must be clear-eyed about the limitations of such a position.
The era of reactive policy is over. Pakistan requires a cohesive strategy that treats economic reform and regional peace as two sides of the same coin. The stakes are high, but the potential for securing a stable future — if navigated with courage and foresight — remains within reach. ■
