Five Soldiers Martyred in Barkhan as Balochistan Operation Intensifies

By Staff Reporter — Islamabad Bureau

Five soldiers of the Pakistan Army, including Major Tauseef Ahmed Bhatti, were martyred during a sanitisation operation in the Barkhan district of Balochistan on Thursday, as security forces engaged a militant cell in a prolonged firefight. Seven terrorists were reported killed in the operation.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the losses, noting that the soldiers embraced martyrdom while clearing a stronghold used by proscribed groups for cross-district operations. The military operation is part of a broader campaign to secure resource-rich and strategically significant zones in the province.

In a separate and deeply troubling development, the Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Gwadar University, along with two other individuals, were reportedly abducted in what authorities are treating as a politically motivated kidnapping.

"Securing minerals without securing the trust of the local population is a strategy built on shifting sands."

The incident has sent shockwaves through academic circles and reignited debate over the adequacy of civilian protection in CPEC-linked areas. Opposition senators demanded a full briefing from the Interior Ministry, pointing to what they described as a dangerous disconnect between "power corridors" and ground realities.

Lakki Marwat Bomb Blast Claims Nine Lives

A bomb affixed to a motorised rickshaw detonated inside a crowded bazaar in Lakki Marwat earlier this week, killing nine civilians, among them a woman and two traffic police officers. Rescue and law enforcement officials cordoned off the site as investigators launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

IMF Releases $1.32bn; Demands Fuel Price Pass-Through

By Economic Correspondent

The State Bank of Pakistan confirmed receipt of a $1.32 billion disbursement from the International Monetary Fund on Thursday, a short-term reprieve for foreign exchange reserves that have been under sustained pressure over recent quarters.

The relief, however, comes bundled with fresh demands. IMF negotiators are insisting that the government pass on petrol and energy price adjustments directly to consumers in order to close a widening revenue gap — a move economists warn risks stoking further inflation among Pakistan's middle and lower-income households.

Trump Arrives in Beijing; Xi Calls for 'Only Viable Path' of Cooperation

United States President Donald Trump touched down in Beijing on Thursday for a high-stakes bilateral summit with President Xi Jinping. The Chinese leader opened proceedings by emphasising that sustained cooperation between the world's two largest economies remains the only productive path forward amid escalating regional tensions and unresolved trade grievances.

Markets across Asia and Europe held in cautious anticipation as the summit commenced, with analysts watching for any concrete breakthrough on tariffs, technology export restrictions, and the South China Sea dispute.

28th Amendment Rumours Strain Coalition Bonds

No official statement has been issued by the government.

Navigating Pakistan's Geopolitical & Economic Tightrope

Rooma Mehmood — Editor-in-Chief

As President Donald Trump lands in Beijing for a historic summit with Xi Jinping, the world watches with bated breath. But for Pakistan, the view from Islamabad is far more complex than a simple binary between superpowers. We find ourselves in the "sideways" phase of global conflict — a dangerous limbo where the threat of war is constant, yet the relief of peace remains elusive.

Pakistan's current foreign policy is a masterclass in high-stakes "hedging." By hosting the Islamabad Talks between Washington and Tehran, Pakistan has successfully pivoted from a perceived regional outlier to an indispensable peacemaker. However, this position is fraught with internal risk.

Analysis continues

The assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei earlier this year sent shockwaves through Pakistan's domestic landscape, sparking mass protests and highlighting the deep spiritual ties between our population and Iran. While mediating, Islamabad must balance its strategic reliance on the U.S. and China with the visceral sentiments of its own people.

"True stability will not come from IMF disbursements or diplomatic mediation alone."

On the economic front, the arrival of $1.32 billion from the IMF brings temporary stability, but at a steep social cost. The lender's insistence on pass-through pricing for fuel and electricity is tightening the noose on the middle and lower classes.

The Verdict

The martyrdom of five soldiers in Barkhan and the abduction of university officials in Gwadar are grim reminders that the security situation in Balochistan is not merely an "internal matter" but a geopolitical fulcrum. Securing minerals without securing the trust of the local population is a strategy built on shifting sands.

Pakistan is no longer just a spectator in the "fracturing world." We are a central actor in the Middle East ceasefire, a testing ground for IMF structural reforms, and a gateway for China's Panda Bonds. To survive this era of sideways geopolitics, our leadership must move beyond reactionary policies.

True stability will come from bridging the gap between a militarized security state and a marginalized citizenry. As we look toward the 28th Amendment and future elections, the question remains: is the state drafting formulas to solve the crisis, or merely formulas to stay in power?
