Iran & Israel Exchange Direct Strikes; Region Braces for Wider War

For the first time since a fragile April ceasefire, Tehran and Jerusalem have struck each other's territory directly — oil markets surge, global powers scramble

By Our World Affairs Correspondent · Islamabad Bureau

In a dramatic and dangerous escalation that threatens to unravel months of painstaking diplomacy, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting northern Israel on Sunday night, with Israeli air defenses intercepting the majority of projectiles even as explosions lit the skies over Tel Aviv. Israel responded within hours, dispatching warplanes that struck Iranian military facilities and, in a strategically significant development, a large petrochemical plant in the vicinity of Tehran.

The exchange marks the first direct bilateral military confrontation since the April ceasefire brokered under intense American pressure. United States President Donald Trump had reportedly urged the Israeli government not to retaliate, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proceeded nonetheless, citing an obligation to protect Israeli citizens.

"The strikes represent a catastrophic failure of the ceasefire architecture assembled in April — the region now stands at its most volatile precipice in a generation."

Global oil markets reacted with immediate alarm. Brent crude spiked past ninety-one dollars per barrel in Asian trading, while stock markets across Europe and Asia recorded sharp declines. Shipping insurance costs in the Persian Gulf surged overnight, raising fears of disruption to the world's critical energy arteries.

Hezbollah has issued renewed warnings of intervention from Lebanese territory, and Houthi forces in Yemen declared solidarity with Tehran. US diplomatic missions in Beirut and Baghdad have been placed on heightened security alert. The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency session Monday morning.
