Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced Thursday that Pakistan has successfully mediated a "final, agreed upon text" for a peace deal between the United States and Iran — a diplomatic milestone that could redefine regional stability and global energy markets.

Both Washington and Tehran have signalled cautious optimism, with President Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urging restraint on speculation about specific terms. Sources indicate the deal includes a 60-day ceasefire extension and a plan to reopen the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world's oil supply passes.

The agreement, months in the making, aims to de-escalate a prolonged conflict that has sent shockwaves through global fuel prices. Pakistan's role as mediator grants Islamabad rare and significant international credibility at a time of domestic economic strain.

Pakistan has achieved something remarkable — brokering a peace deal between two global powers while its own economy staggers under IMF austerity. The contrast is stark: Islamabad wins prestige on the world stage as the petrol pump and utility bill remain crushing burdens at home.

The 2026-27 budget reveals this contradiction in numbers. A 7% salary hike eclipsed by 8.2% inflation. A Rs 3,000 billion defence allocation alongside silence on local infrastructure. Diplomatic success, however historic, rarely translates into relief on the kitchen table.
