Middle East · Strait of Hormuz
Trump Claims the Strait. Iran Holds the Door Shut.
With the U.S. Navy enforcing a blockade and President Trump posting a map labelling the Strait of Hormuz "new US territory," the waterway at the heart of global oil trade has become the world's most dangerous standoff.
Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have reached a new peak as President Donald Trump declared there are no talks planned with Iran and asserted that the waterway remains open under what he described as a U.S. naval blockade — a claim Iran flatly rejects. Tehran insists the strait will stay closed until the blockade is lifted, sanctions are ended, and additional demands are met.
"Iran will not reopen the strait while the United States maintains a military presence in our waters and keeps sanctions in place."
Caught in the crossfire, the UAE reported that two Iranian ballistic missiles were fired toward its territory — one landing within its territorial waters. Iran denied the allegation. The UAE responded by freezing all trade and financial dealings with Iran, a sweeping economic rupture between two Gulf neighbours. A commercial vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile in the strait, leaving at least one crew member dead.
Shipping traffic has increasingly shifted to a UN-authorised Omani route. Trump has separately threatened action against Oman over its mediation efforts, putting the sultanate in a precarious diplomatic position.
