Ukraine War

Russian Drone Strike Kills 16 at Civilian Mall in Zelenskyy's Hometown

A "double-tap" attack on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih wounds more than 130, including over 20 children, as the Ukrainian president demands greater global pressure on Moscow.

Adevastating Russian drone assault struck a busy shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih on Friday, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, killing at least 14 to 16 people and leaving more than 120 to 130 others wounded. Emergency responders confirmed that over 20 of the casualties were children.

The attack, described by officials as a "double-tap" strike — a deliberate second blow timed to hit rescue workers responding to the first — drew immediate condemnation from Zelenskyy, who called it "an act of pure cynicism" and demanded that international partners apply greater military and diplomatic pressure on Russia.

"The attack was cynical — a deliberate strike on civilians going about their daily lives."

— President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Additional Russian strikes elsewhere in Ukraine caused further civilian deaths on the same day, underscoring what analysts describe as a systematic targeting of non-military infrastructure aimed at breaking public morale heading into winter.

Trade War

US–Canada Trade Talks Collapse as Washington Imposes 50% Tariffs

Negotiations between Washington and Ottawa ended without agreement, with the United States moving to impose 50 per cent tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports — including plywood, liquor, electrical equipment, and hockey gear.

Canadian Imports Targeted

Canada's government pledged swift retaliation, warning that reciprocal measures would be announced within days. Economic analysts cautioned that the escalation signals a new phase of economic nationalism that could ripple through global supply chains.

US Threatens "Toughest Sanctions in History" Against Iran

As the Iran–US standoff approaches the six-month mark, Washington threatened an unprecedented sanctions package. Tehran's foreign minister dismissed the warning, saying Iran has "seen this movie before," while also raising the spectre of disruption to the Strait of Hormuz.

SC Order Flouted as Imran Khan Taken to PIMS Instead of Shifa Hospital

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was transported for a medical check-up under a Supreme Court directive, but authorities routed him to PIMS rather than the court-ordered Shifa International Hospital, before returning him to Adiala Jail. Officials declared him medically fit.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and Khan's sister filed contempt petitions, alleging deliberate violation of the judicial order. The government countered with a review plea, citing security concerns. Bar council members condemned what they described as institutional disregard for the rule of law.

Repeated institutional friction risks eroding public confidence in the rule of law.

Monsoon Fury: Punjab, KP, Islamabad on Flood Alert as Deaths Mount

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast heavy thunderstorms, flash floods, and landslide risks across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan through the weekend.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed provincial governments to fast-track financial assistance to flood-affected families and restore disrupted electricity and road links. NDMA and civil administration teams have been placed on high alert across vulnerable districts.

49 Militants Killed in KP and Balochistan Operations

Pakistani security forces killed 49 alleged militants affiliated with the TTP and BLA in a series of intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The Pakistan Army has simultaneously been deployed in Rawalpindi for six months on "sensitive security duties."

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the army chief jointly called for dialogue and development in Balochistan as a long-term counterterrorism strategy alongside kinetic operations.

Navigating Storms at Home and Abroad

August 22, 2026 finds the world and Pakistan both grappling with familiar yet intensifying pressures. Globally, the failure of US–Canada trade talks and the sharp escalation of tariffs signal that economic nationalism remains a dominant force. Simultaneously, the brutal Russian strike on a civilian shopping centre in Ukraine and the renewed American threats of unprecedented sanctions against Iran underline how protracted conflicts continue to exact a heavy human and economic toll with little prospect of early resolution.

Closer to home, Pakistan faces its own converging challenges. The monsoon's latest spell brings the annual threat of flooding and landslides, testing the state's capacity for rapid relief and longer-term climate resilience. At the same time, the ongoing controversy surrounding former Prime Minister Imran Khan's medical transfer has once again placed the relationship between the judiciary, the executive, and political forces under intense scrutiny. Whatever one's view of the individuals involved, repeated institutional friction risks eroding public confidence in the rule of law.

Yet there are constructive notes amid the turbulence. Counter-terrorism operations demonstrate security forces' continued pressure on extremist groups. Calls for dialogue and development in Balochistan, the push for digital transformation through partnerships such as the Google MoU, and steps such as free AI tools for students and a new heart-transplant facility all point toward a future-oriented agenda.

The lesson from today's headlines is clear: neither external shocks nor domestic political contests will disappear overnight. What matters is the capacity of governments and societies to respond with competence, fairness, and foresight. For Pakistan, that means treating monsoon preparedness and institutional respect as non-negotiable priorities. For the wider world, it means recognising that tariff walls and sanctions alone rarely produce lasting stability. In an interconnected age, pragmatic cooperation and the quiet work of building resilience remain the only reliable paths forward.
