Pakistan at 79: Freedom Won, Freedom Unfinished
As green-and-white flags flutter from Karachi to Gilgit, celebratory shots ring out with deadly consequence, and a minister's convoy is ambushed in Balochistan — the nation marks a milestone amid unresolved challenges.

Pakistan's 79th Independence Day opened with the customary fanfare — a change of guard at Quaid's mausoleum, Presidential and Prime Ministerial addresses calling for unity and institutional reform, and military awards conferred upon 1,172 personnel. Yet by nightfall, the celebrations carried a familiar, bitter undercurrent.
"True independence is measured not by ceremonial parades alone, but by the ability to protect every citizen from gunfire — whether celebratory or militant."
In Karachi, celebratory aerial gunfire left nearly 100 injured and claimed at least one life. In Mastung, Balochistan Home Minister Mir Ziaullah Langau's convoy was ambushed; the minister escaped unhurt, but six security personnel sustained injuries. An operation against the attackers was immediately launched.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both emphasised national unity and a commitment to repelling aggression, while the Armed Forces chiefs pledged to uphold the Constitution. World leaders — from Russia, Iran, the United States and Norway — sent Independence Day greetings.
On the economic front, the government reported that the fiscal deficit has narrowed to 2.6 percent of GDP, the lowest in 22 years, while petroleum levy collection reached a record Rs1.57 trillion. Analysts note these are encouraging signs, though sustained reform and delivery for ordinary citizens remain the true test.

Hormuz Strait Near-Blockade Shakes Global Energy Markets
Iran asserts control; the US threatens indefinite naval pressure as shipping traffic collapses.
Reuters · Gulf
Two more vessels — UAE tankers linked to ADNOC — were attacked this week, bringing transit through the Strait of Hormuz to a near-halt. The United States has warned it could maintain a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely, while Tehran has asserted control over the strategic waterway.
Talks between the parties have yielded limited progress. Shipping insurers have suspended cover for the route, and global energy prices continue to climb. A large oil slick now threatens the Iranian coastline following earlier incidents.
Diplomacy
Pakistan Pushes Islamabad MoU, Deepens Ties with Norway
Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stressed implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to ease regional tensions — particularly relevant as Middle Eastern instability reverberates across the region.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met the Norwegian Foreign Minister to expand counterterrorism cooperation. Pakistani authorities noted that illegal immigration to Norway has fallen by approximately 47 percent. The Chinese ambassador also met Dar to discuss bilateral ties and regional developments.

WHO: Healthcare Attacked Four Times Daily in 2026
A new WHO report reveals that attacks on healthcare facilities in conflict zones have averaged more than four incidents per day so far this year. The UN separately recorded a rise in civilian deaths in Ukraine in July following intensified Russian strikes on cities.

Independence Amid Turbulence — Pakistan's Resolve on a Fractured Global Stage
By Rooma Mehmood · Islamabad
On this 79th Independence Day, Pakistan stands at a familiar crossroads: celebrating the hard-won freedom of 1947 while confronting persistent internal challenges and a world sliding deeper into disorder. The green-and-white flags fluttering across cities from Karachi to Gilgit symbolise not just history, but an enduring aspiration for sovereignty, justice, and progress.
Yet the day's events — celebratory gunfire claiming lives in Karachi, an ambush on a provincial minister's convoy in Balochistan, and leadership's calls for unity and reform — remind us that independence remains an unfinished project.
The fiscal gains — a reduced deficit, record petroleum levies — offer breathing room, but they must translate into tangible relief for citizens facing inflation, insecurity, and institutional weakness. Rebuilding flood-hit homes in Balochistan is a step forward; deeper reform in governance, rule of law, and economic self-reliance is essential.
"Quaid-e-Azam's vision demands more than patriotic fervor — it requires accountability, inclusivity, and the courage to confront hard truths."
As leaders urge stability and reform, the people must hold them to it. Pakistan's strength has always lain in its resilience. On this Independence Day, let that resilience fuel not just celebration, but a collective recommitment to building a nation worthy of its founding ideals — secure at home, respected abroad, and free in the fullest sense.
