Hormuz Talks Near Deal as Trump Holds Off Strike
Iran and Oman inch toward a shipping accord — Pakistan watches closely as energy markets ease and Islamabad dispatches its top leadership to Riyadh.
Iran and Oman are in the final stages of agreeing a proposed shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran says the arrangement covers technical, legal, security and environmental dimensions, but any reopening of the strategic waterway would depend on Washington ending its naval blockade of Iranian ports.
US President Donald Trump indicated this week that a deal could be announced imminently and has held off a planned major military strike, stating publicly that he prefers a negotiated outcome over further conflict. Oil markets responded with some easing of pressure — a development felt immediately at petrol pumps across Pakistan.

PM, Field Marshal Fly to Riyadh as Gulf Tensions Run High
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir departed for a three-day visit to Saudi Arabia beginning today, August 6. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Pakistan's Foreign Office described the visit as carrying significance well beyond the immediate regional crisis.
Pakistan has reaffirmed its support for Saudi security following Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. The timing of the visit — amid active Hormuz negotiations — signals Islamabad's intent to remain a credible diplomatic actor at the table of regional power.
"Pakistan's foreign policy must walk its careful line between competing regional powers — supporting de-escalation while protecting national economic interests."

PML-N Leads with 24 Seats After Two Phases in Azad Kashmir
In the first two phases of the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, PML-N has secured 24 seats against PPP's 10 in the 53-member assembly. Results from Muzaffarabad Division and refugee seats have been officially notified.
The final phase is scheduled for August 10 in Poonch Division. Turnout has been notably low amid ongoing protests and a boycott call by the banned Joint Awami Action Committee, which has raised concerns over governance and economic grievances.
Pakistan also observed Youm-e-Istehsal today with rallies condemning India's 2019 actions in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Pakistan-Iran Ink Round-the-Clock Border Deal; US Eyes Reko Diq Minerals
Pakistan and Iran have agreed to institute round-the-clock border operations and have advanced free-trade agreement talks aimed at substantially boosting bilateral commerce. Officials framed the agreement as turning shared geography into shared opportunity.
Separately, US firms are exploring Pakistan as a source of critical minerals, with progress — though slower than expected — reported on the long-delayed Reko Diq copper-and-gold project. Structural investment in Pakistan's resources sector could offer long-term insulation from energy import volatility.
Pakistan's stock exchange rebounded sharply with the KSE-100 gaining thousands of points on the back of easing Gulf tensions.

Navigating the Hormuz Tightrope: A Moment of Opportunity and Peril for Pakistan
The tentative progress toward a Strait of Hormuz shipping arrangement between Iran and Oman offers a fragile but welcome pause in a crisis that has already strained global energy markets and regional stability. For Pakistan, the stakes are immediate and profound. As a nation heavily dependent on imported oil and gas, sharing a long border with Iran, Islamabad has every reason to welcome any development that could lower fuel costs, stabilise the rupee, and reduce the risk of wider conflict spilling across its western frontier.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir's timely visit to Riyadh underscores this reality. Saudi Arabia remains a vital economic and strategic partner; reaffirming solidarity while regional temperatures run high is both prudent diplomacy and necessary insurance.
Yet caution is essential. Any Hormuz arrangement that fails to secure genuine freedom of navigation risks becoming a temporary fix rather than a durable solution. Pakistan must continue advocating for a rules-based reopening that protects the interests of all littoral and energy-dependent states.
On the domestic front, the PML-N's strong early showing in Azad Kashmir elections is notable, but low turnout and ongoing protests signal deeper discontent. A government formed under these conditions must prioritise genuine responsiveness.
If the Hormuz talks succeed, Pakistan gains breathing room on energy costs and regional security. If they falter, the costs — already visible at the petrol pump and in flood-alerted northern valleys — will only grow. Diplomacy, diversification, and domestic resilience must remain our guiding principles.
