Trump and Xi Conclude Washington Summit Without Major Breakthrough

State visit closes with archives tour after talks on trade, technology and security yield no firm agreements.

US President Donald Trump is concluding a high-profile state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders held talks focused on bilateral relations, with Xi stressing the need for a constructive relationship built on strategic stability. A formal state dinner brought together leaders from the tech industry, though no major breakthroughs on trade, technology or security were announced. Trump is scheduled to close out the visit with a tour of the US archives.

Houthi Attacks Push Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan Toward Joint Response

Houthi forces have stepped up missile and drone attacks on targets inside Saudi Arabia, with Saudi air defenses intercepting several ballistic missiles. Military chiefs from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan are now planning to meet under an existing joint defence framework, while France has offered troops and radar systems to help protect a key Saudi oil facility. Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly, rejecting accusations of genocide in Gaza; several delegations walked out during the speech as protests continued outside UN headquarters.

Drone Strikes Hit Russian Refinery and Passenger Train

Ukrainian drone strikes damaged a Russian oil refinery, forcing a temporary halt to operations, and struck a passenger train, killing two people. Russia said it destroyed a large number of incoming drones, while its own attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure continued.

Forces Thwart Infiltration Bid Along Afghan Border

Pakistani security forces say they thwarted an infiltration attempt by Afghan fighters along the border in the Gulistan/Chaman area, resulting in several casualties on the other side. This follows earlier Pakistani airstrikes on militant positions inside Afghanistan. Officials say Pakistan does not seek further escalation but will respond to threats against its territory.

PTI Plans March Toward Islamabad

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is preparing for a march toward Islamabad on September 27, calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Authorities have increased security deployments, including Rangers, and taken preventive measures. PTI leaders say the protest will stay peaceful, and some party figures have indicated a possible delay if certain demands are met.

Opinion

Clarity Amid Global Uncertainty

The carefully staged meetings between the United States and China highlight managed competition rather than genuine partnership. At the same time, the Middle East remains volatile, with missile attacks, defiant speeches at the United Nations, and fragile diplomatic openings. The war in Ukraine continues to impose heavy costs, while rapid advances in artificial intelligence outpace efforts to regulate them.

Pakistan operates in this unsettled environment as both an affected party and an active participant. Recent border incidents with Afghanistan underline the persistent security challenges on the western frontier. Firm responses to infiltration are necessary to protect sovereignty, yet repeated cycles of action and reaction risk prolonged instability at a time when economic recovery requires calm.

The planned political march adds internal pressure. The right to protest is fundamental, but recurring confrontation between government and opposition diverts attention from essential tasks of reform, investment and effective governance. Neither side appears fully committed to resolving differences through institutional means.

Pakistan's recent diplomatic efforts — engagement with Iran, participation in regional defence discussions, and outreach at the United Nations — demonstrate awareness that national interests cannot be advanced in isolation. However, external engagement yields limited results without greater internal coherence.

Priorities should include managing the western border through a mix of deterrence and dialogue, encouraging political actors to pursue differences within constitutional bounds, and treating relationships with major powers as complementary rather than exclusive. In a period of great-power rivalry and regional flashpoints, countries in Pakistan's position succeed by building domestic resilience and preserving strategic flexibility. The alternative is continual reaction to successive crises. The opportunity for a more deliberate approach remains available.
