Remembering the past, facing the present
By Rooma Mehmood, Editor
Every year on 6 September, Pakistan pauses to honour the courage shown in 1965. The day remains a powerful reminder of national unity and sacrifice. This year's observances again paid respect to those who gave their lives in defence of the country.
Yet remembrance alone is not enough. The region around us is unstable. The long war in Ukraine is showing the first cautious signs of diplomacy, while tensions between the United States and Iran continue to threaten energy supplies and wider security. In this environment, Pakistan's growing role in regional defence partnerships is an important development. Strength through cooperation is necessary.
True national strength, however, also depends on internal stability. The ongoing discussion about new provinces must be handled carefully, with genuine consensus and respect for the Constitution. The continuous sacrifices of security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan demand more than military responses — they require better governance, economic opportunity, and justice.
On this Defence Day, the best tribute to the martyrs is a Pakistan that is secure, economically resilient, and united. The spirit of 1965 must be matched by clear-eyed leadership in 2026.
